Okeford United 1 - 3 Sturminster Newton United

Okeford United came off second best to Sturminster Newton in the first league encounter between the sides for many years.  In what was a scrappy affair the visitors prevailed 3-1.

Okeford had started the game brightly, and went 1-0 up just 10 minutes in to the game.  The referee spotted a push from the Sturminster keeper on Marc Doble, and pointed to the spot.  Olly Chaffey stepped up to convert the penalty.  The Butterboys continued to press forward, with Matt Jordan and Marc Doble both seeing efforts saved.

As the half went on Sturminster started to get into the game, looking particularly dangerous on set pieces.  And it was a set piece that eventually brought the Cherries back into the game.  Okeford lost possession in the middle of the park straight after the second half kick off, conceding a free kick on the right moments later.  The ball was delivered deep into the box, and the header back across goal was nodded in from an unmarked player from close range.

The game got increasingly scrappy, with both sides collecting a couple of yellow cards for mistimed tackles.  Sturminster Newton completed the turnaround on 60 minutes, with a free kick curled round the wall finding the back of the net.

This livened up the home side, and they pressed forward for the equaliser, changing to a more conventional 4-4-2 formation, before throwing men forward with 10 minutes to go.  But their efforts were not rewarded.  Olly Chaffey, Tim Westlake and Doug Nelson all hit the woodwork, and the Cherries keeper dived smartly to save a Doble effort hit from just outside the box.

It was to prove to be one of those days for Okeford, and all hopes of salvaging a draw were extinguished when former Butterboy Sam Stockley scored on the break for the visitors, with a goal that was heavily disputed after what looked like a clear offside.

Okeford were left to rue their missed chances, and will look to bounce back next week in the second round of the Senior Trophy against Dorchester Town A.
