Okeford United 3 - 1 Dorchester Town A

Okeford United ran out worthy winners in the second round of the Dorset Senior Trophy, defeating Dorchester Town A 3-1.  It was a spirited performance from the Dorset League Division One outfit, who were holding the Butterboys at the break, but the home side always looked likely to continue their cup run.

It was a disjointed start to the game, with both sides struggling to get use to the conditions of a soft pitch following heavy rain the night before.  However, Okeford soon got their passing game going, and began to dominate possession.  A goal didn’t look too far away as a couple of chances came and went.  The best chance fell to Luke Turk, who stayed on his feet after a collision with the keeper, but following the contact was pushed too far wide to get a shot on target.  The referee Chris Brokenshaw had signalled advantage but failed to bring play back, where the keeper would have been in trouble as the last man.

Okeford did manage to break the deadlock a few moments later.  Following a foul 10 yards into the opposition half, Matthew Salisbury whipped a free kick in to the box from the right hand side, and full back Steve Tweedie rose to flick a header beyond the keeper from 10 yards.

Mark Doble nearly doubled the lead 5 minutes later, his chip glancing the top of the bar and rippling the back of net, causing some sections of the crowd to think he had scored.

However, the home side were to suffer a sucker-punch in stoppage time of the first half.  The Dorchester striker lost his marker from a corner kick and powered a header into the bottom corner, beating Richie Young (making his return to first team action) and the defender on the line.

The Butterboys didn’t let this setback deter them, and came out strongly in the second half.  They took control of the game in midfield, and were beating the offside trap time after time.  Okeford grabbed the lead for the second time on 55 minutes.  Doble ran on to a through ball down the inside left, and drew the keeper before squaring the ball to Doug Nelson to stab home from close range.  More chances followed, with the visiting keeper making two smart saves, and the Butterboys firing wide from inside the box on three occasions.

Into the last 10 minutes, and with the game not being wrapped up despite their dominance, Dorchester earned themselves a couple of corners and threatened to grab an unlikely equaliser.  However, the defensive partnership of Hewitt and Drake was not to be breached again, with both winning important headers within the box.

The victory was secured when Olly Chaffey broke through the defence, and the midfielder placed his right foot shot into the bottom corner.

Okeford will now face Trinidad (Wimborne) in the third round on 10th December.
