Okeford earn a point

Okeford United took to the field for only the second time since 17th November, and left Sturminster Marshall with a point.  Marshall started and ended the game two points above their visitors, but having played 7 games more after Okeford’s season had stalled due to the bad winter weather.

Okeford started the game well, creating a chance from a corner a minute into the game, but Matt Drake’s header went over the bar.  This was the only decent chance Okeford created in the half, and it was the hosts who managed to play the better football on a poor pitch.  Their possession was rewarded in stoppage time of the first half.  The ball broke down for Okeford in the middle of the park, and Marshall quickly capitalised, with the through ball being smashed into the roof of the net from the edge of the area.

The Butterboys had their keeper to thank for only being one down at the half.  Lee Gray made three good saves, plus a superb triple save to keep the visitors in the game.

A half time substitution saw Okeford change to a more traditional 4-4-2, as they attempted to get a foothold in the game by pushing Sturminster further back.  The tactical switch worked, as they started to increase their possession, though they didn’t create many goal-scoring opportunities.  A further change on the seventieth minute almost had instant reward though.  Shortly after moving to three at the back, Okeford’s possession high up the pitch yielded a corner.  Stuart Antell got a step on his marker and rose well, but his header didn’t trouble the keeper.  Moments later though, Okeford got did get their reward for an improved second half performance as Callum Frampton’s whipped cross was bravely headed home by Jonny Wareham under pressure from the hosts goalkeeper.

As the final whistle blew, Okeford certainly had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping them in the game in the first half, and after such a long lay off without playing, were pleased with the point they fought hard to earn in the second half.
